It was a grueling time trying to figure out what was going on with Shylee when she first started showing symptoms of Celiac. Her symptoms initially began when she was 13 years old in the Fall of 2015. She started complaining of stomach pain, she was using the restroom more frequently, and had headaches. Initially I thought it was the stress of being an everyday teenager. I took her to our doctor and they said it was IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), drew blood and said not to worry. The symptoms continued and worsened to where my husband and I thought she may have an eating disorder because she would run to the restroom after meals. We became concerned; as horrible as it may sound I listened at the bathroom door for sounds of purging, and I was wrong her stomach was VERY upset.
Approximately after 2 weeks of waiting Shylee's results came in and the doctor called us. We were informed that her tTg (tissue transglutaminase) level was extremely high and Shylee needed to see a gastroenterologist. She was advised to cut back on her gluten intake until she saw the gastroenterologist. The tTg level is usually low in people that do not have Celiac disease. It took until the Spring of 2016 to get Shylee an appointment with a pediatric gastroenterologist. And we were so glad to finally meet Dr. Kinder.
To be continued...
